Ten years ago, we recorded the “golden anniversary” of Fernandes Oculista and today, in celebration of another decade of life for the oldest optician in the city of Coimbra, we met Hermínio Carvalho. The current head of the practice, founded by Jaime Fernandes in August 1963, hopes that the company continues to evolve without losing its way over the last 60 years, remaining a benchmark in visual health.

How and when did Fernandes Oculista come about?

Fernandes Oculista began operating on 8 August 1963, at number 41 Rua Visconde da Luz, in the heart of downtown Coimbra. At the time it was the fourth optician’s in the city. The desire to innovate and bring a different perspective, combining rigour and technical ability, quickly consolidated its presence in the city and the Beira region.

You’ve just celebrated 60 years. What moments do you remember from your history?

Celebrating 60 years in business, and currently the oldest opticians in Coimbra, we would like to highlight four moments: in 1963, the opening by the brothers João and Jaime Fernandes; in 1981, the total purchase by Jaime Fernandes, taking on a new dynamic due to his personal stamp, personality, friendliness and captivation; in 1996, with my entry into the company – I have a degree in Economics and Management and therefore took over the accounting and management, while doing a degree in Optometry at the University of Minho; in 1998, the opening of the second shop at Rua Ferreira Borges, 48, Coimbra, with optometry and contactology services; and in 2020, the arrival of my son David, with a degree and master’s in Design, to ensure continuity, starting with marketing and design and then completing his training in ocular optics.
