On February 28th, Madalena Lira and Jorge Jorge launched their book ‘Visão sem Segredos’ [‘Vision Without Secrets’] at the Science Auditorium of the University of Minho. ÓpticaPro was present and spoke with the authors, who revealed a bit more about this book – “The main message is that a large percentage of vision problems are unavoidable but curable”, they told us.

How did the idea of writing this book come about?

Everyone working in the eyecare field knows that there is a lot of misinformation and misconceptions about vision and how it works. Today there are so many unreliable sources of “information” which increases the confusion surrounding this subject and, in many cases, leads to mistakes being made. The fact that many people, during and after the pandemic, suffered worsening in their vision, and were surprised by this, inspired us to help people understand how the visual system works and, how to take care of it.

What is the message you aim to give?

The main message is that a large percentage of vision problems are unavoidable but curable. By following a few basic guidelines, it is possible to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. We would like to emphasise that we are all (professionals, parents, teachers and the population in general) are active agents in preventing vision loss and improving vision.
