Researchers José González-Méijome and António Queirós from the University of Minho’s School of Sciences (ECUM) stand out among the most influential names in global optometry.

The faculty members rank 50th and 192nd, respectively, in the “Global Optometrist Top 200 Research Ranking,” which recognizes professionals in the field with the greatest scientific impact, according to the Scopus database.

José González-Méijome has published 258 scientific articles since 1999, with over 7,100 citations and an “h-index” of 46. António Queirós has 79 articles since 2004, more than 2,100 citations, and an “h-index” of 27. Globally, the list is topped by Konrad Pesudovs (University of New South Wales, Australia).

Among the 75 institutions from 15 countries represented in the ranking, Portugal is represented by the University of Minho, ranking seventh in terms of the number of researchers, behind the USA (70), Australia (46), the UK (43), Canada (13), Spain (8), Hong Kong (6), and alongside New Zealand, India, and Iran (2 each).

José Manuel González-Méijome is a full professor and president of ECUM, where he founded and coordinates the Clinical and Experimental Optometry Research Laboratory (CEORLab), part of the Center for Physics at the Universities of Minho and Porto (CF-UM-UP).

Also trained at UMinho, António Queirós is an associate professor with accreditation in the Department of Physics at ECUM, specializing in areas such as orthokeratology, corneal topography, central and peripheral refraction, and visual quality.

The “Global Optometrist Top 200 Research Ranking” was established in 2021 by a group of researchers and is based on an algorithm that analyzes the impact metrics of scientific publications by leading optometrists worldwide. The results are updated periodically on optomrankings.com.
