Luís Moreia is an industrial engineer and eyewear creator. Born into a family of opticians and passionate about fashion and music from an early age, he decided to embark on the preservation of Portuguese craftsmanship and a year ago created Winner Against Winner (WxW), a brand that produces handcrafted eyewear. Luís notes that the brand’s objective is “to create products that not only meet the needs of customers but also become part of their identity and personal style.” For this reason, the creation and production of the eyewear undergo a detailed and meticulous process, involving over 20 different operations, from the initial design to the finished piece, which can take more than a week.

How did your interest in fashion, craftsmanship, and eyewear develop?

My interest in fashion and eyewear has deep roots in my family, which has owned optical shops for many years. From a young age, I was exposed to this world, which naturally sparked my interest in design and the quality of the products we offer. Over my 25 years, I have closely observed the changes occurring in this sector, which has led to a saturated market of injected eyewear. This made me realize that the quality of handcrafted glasses has become undervalued. This recognition ignited a passion for craftsmanship in me and a mission to do everything possible to preserve it, driving me to explore and appreciate the best in handmade production and the creation of unique pieces. The desire to bring back the value and authenticity of handcrafted eyewear motivated the creation of WxW. The combination of these influences shaped my appreciation for fashion design, leading me to explore how to merge traditional practices with modern techniques to create unique products. The desire to do more than just follow trends and create something truly meaningful motivated my decision to enter the eyewear market.

How and when was WxW born?

WxW was born from the desire to combine traditional craftsmanship with innovation in eyewear design. After learning and practicing in various companies in the sector, I realized there was an opportunity to create a brand that united quality, authenticity, and modern design. I decided to found WxW about a year ago, aiming to offer glasses that stand out for their excellence and authenticity, preserving the value of Portuguese craftsmanship.

What is the meaning of the brand name?

The name WxW, which stands for “Winner Against Winner,” reflects our commitment to constant improvement. I chose this name because I believe that each pair of glasses should be a symbol of achievement and quality, representing victory over mediocrity and the relentless pursuit of perfection. We want our customers to see WxW glasses as something more than just an accessory – we want them to feel that they are acquiring a truly valuable and distinctive piece.
