As a graduate in Applied Physics – with a Speciality in Optics – from the University of Minho, Janete Ferreira inherited her Father’s passion for optics and her mother’s dream of creating her own business. She grew up in Aveiro and worked in Viriato until her love for the sea brought her to Costa Nova. Surrounded by colourful houses and sand dunes, Janete Ferreira found the right place to build her family and serve the community. Riaóptica is a tangible form of a dream come true.

When talking about Riaóptica, you often use the term “us”, why?

My Father always worked as an Optical Technician. My Mother, who is unfortunately no longer with us, was always the driving force behind the dream of this company as my Father could never imagine us with our own business. I spent many years studying, and I learnt a lot but there came a time when I had to support my parents; this was the moment I decided to create the business. My dream was always to live near the sea as I have always been mesmerised by the beach. This is not my personal project, it is a thread of a family dream. I felt like giving up on numerous occasions, especially during the pandemic, but my customers were the first to push me forward and encourage me, always asking me when I would finally open. Then I feel as though it was my Mother telling me not to give up. She was a woman with unshakeable strength from the north of Portugal. It was this strength and encouragement that makes want to learn more and improve constantly.
