In the scope of its Sustainability Policy, MultiOpticas decided to launch a challenge to children referred by HELPO (an NGO it has been sponsoring for more than 10 years) to collect rubbish from the beaches during the holiday camp period. After all the rubbish collected, mainly plastic, the marine biologist Ana Pêgo joined this initiative to alert, inform and raise awareness among these youngsters about the importance of cleaning the beaches and oceans, which behaviours to adopt in a conscious way for the environment, as well as encourage the practice of not using plastic. This initiative is based on the project developed by the aforementioned marine biologist, which is called Plasticus maritimus.
By learning about the history and the project of the marine biologist – “Plasticus maritimus, an invasive species”, the children created an artistic picture with the pieces of plastic rubbish previously found on the beach, combining the enriching experience with the biologist’s testimony.
The Helpo Association is a non-profit non-governmental organisation which has been active since 2008 in Portugal, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe to promote development through investment in education, as a means of improving the quality of life of children and the societies in which they live.
